Classroom Procedures
Daily Routines |
When students first enter the room, they are expected to have all of their materials ready (as part of a participation grade). Students are to have their homework assignments (if applicable) out on their desk. On the board will be a -brief, 10-minute warm up activity ranging from a writing prompt, a Quizlet activity, a puzzle, etc. During this time, students will have the opportunity to conference with me about any questions or concerns that they have and ensure that all of their work is completed to the best of their ability.
Reading As a class we will then go over any homework questions and grade when necessary. We then will begin our Reading period in which we will be reading short stories and articles while practicing active reading strategies to promote reading comprehension. Weekly comprehension quizzes will consist of short written/typed responses and will usually be distributed at the end of the week. Students will be given some time during the class period for SQUIRT (independent reading). Language Arts 5th Grade Students will be given a weekly spelling list every Friday during class. We will go over their list and practice strategies and look for spelling patterns. Students will be assigned work through Spelling Connections that will be due Monday and Wednesday of each week. Students will then have an assessment at the start of each Friday period. In addition, we will be working with different grammar websites and completing mini-lessons with fun activities throughout the week. NoRedInk will be frequently used to track student progress. As the year progresses, students will be writing weekly short responses and essays about a variety of topics and participating in both teacher-lead and student-lead writer's workshops. 6th Grade Students will be given weekly vocabulary lists every Friday during class. We will begin by learning about the root words of the week and completing in- class study packets. Students will be assigned homework in their vocabulary packets that are due Tuesday of each week (illustrations). Students will be tested on their knowledge of the roots every Thursday, and will be tested on the definitions of the words every Friday. Students will also have weekly short responses, journals, and essays throughout the year and participate in both teacher-lead and student-lead writer's workshops. I will do my best to provide direct feedback based on content and grammar to students so they can master their writing skills. |

We will look into the beginnings of civilization, ancient Egypt, Indo-China, Greece, Rome, Medieval Times, and wrap up the year with the Renaissance. |
HOMEWORK POLICY
Homework is due before 7:00 am the day it due unless otherwise specified. Students who do not have their homework to turn in must fill out at "Student Responsibility" form and will receive partial credit once they turn in the assignment. Not turning in the assignment will automatically result in a zero. Students who know ahead of time that they will be exceptionally busy must schedule a conference with the teacher so an appropriate extension can be given. Under emergency situations, students will need a note from their guardian to receive full credit on a late assignment.
Homework is not meant to be busy work. Students are to use what they learned at school on their assignments to master their skills and progress as learners.
